Gaming in the library?!!!

I see that many of the larger libraries are having gaming activities for their pre-teen and teen patrons. I think it is a great idea to get the kids in the library, especially if they usually wouldn't be in the library.

Someone named JUDY turned 50 today!
Wasn't she brave coming to work on her 50th BIRTHDAY!
Happy Birthday Judy!

Robbed!

On Labor Day weekend, my husband and I were driving home from the lake. At 2:30 in the afternoon, on a highway...I saw 2 guys at the door of a home and one guy was kicking in the door. I turned to my husband and said. "Did you see that guy just kick that door in?" He said he didn't ...what did I want to do?....we drove on down and decided to turn around and go back. We turned down the road the house was on and didn't see anyone, but there was a truck parked at the bottom of the hill. So, we drove by it and turned around and came back by, so I could take photos of the license plate and the truck. As we were driving back up the hill to the highway, the guy I saw kick in the door started down the hill...I kept clicking photos of him and about the time he got even with the truck window, he snatched the camera out of my hands!!! I was not hanging it out the window, although I know I should have had the window up and we should have been stepping on the gas. Regardless, we both jumped out and ran back to the guy, who was already in his truck (a stick-shift)and trying to get away. He could not keep the truck cranked and keep the camera from 4 arms trying to reach through the window. My husband kept turning the steering wheel and turning the key off and the truck kept rolling back sideways. I wasn't getting anywhere through the window, so I darted across the front of the truck and opened the passenger door and dived for my camera. We had a tug of war, the strap broke, it landed in the floorboard and I grabbed it, but he grabbed it back...all while My husband was wrestling the steering wheel and we rolled back in a ditch! My husband hollered for me to come on, that he was stuck and we ran to the truck and I dialed 911 (which is what I should have done in the first place). Anyway. we were right on the county line and 911 couldn't decide which county to send....
I am yelling... "they are going to get away, if you don't get somebody here". The guy was walking back up the hill with MY camera and the second guy came out of the house with a big case, and we decided to drive down the road and ask a guy mowing to help us. He told us the name of the road and we waited in his yard 20 MINUTES before the first police cars arrived. The robbers had loaded up and pushed the truck out and were gone.

But we know what they look like and what they drive, and the police are hot on their trail. If I had had on my athletic shoes-instead of my flip flops, I could have kicked his butt. I hope he looks back over his shoulder the rest of his life, worrying about one pissed off librarian kicking his butt!

I am getting a newer, better camera...but I will miss my favorite camera...we had been through a lot together.

2.0 in the libraries?

Everything that I have read about and experimented with in these exercises are great and I can see what a great service this would be for the school systems to use. In the public library, I have a hard time seeing how small, rural libraries could support this level of technology, since they hardly have the resources or manpower to run their programs now. Also, they would need to hire a tech team at each library to keep the systems running and support the patrons. No amount of technology can create more time or monies.

I was very impressed with what the Michigan libraries accomplished. Kudos to them.

What is that I smell?

Last week, I was talking to my Mom on the phone at 7 AM and I saw a skunk run across my yard and get a drink from the drip at my central unit. Then it went to the front yard and ate seeds under my bird feeder.
Then this past weekend, I went outside to see the meteorites and was looking up and looked over and there was a skunk about 10 yards away under my backyard feeder. The next night I couldn't sleep and went out on the front porch and spotlighted the front feeder and there was a different skunk (this one had a stripe. He stamped his front feet and stuck that tail straight up...this means WATCH OUT AND BACK OFF!
I retreated in the house.
This morning I got my cup of coffee about 5 AM and went out on the front porch. It was still dark, so I spotlighted the tree where the birdfeeders are and there were TWO skunks. I turned off the light and just stood there for awhile, when all of a sudden one runs straight for the porch (they are fast like cats) and crashes through the flower bed below me and runs down my sidewalk! Then the other one takes the same path only slower.
It got my kicked my heart into overdrive for sure.

Hummingbirds

http://www.flickr.com/photos/11248901@N08/1061182881/

I enjoy the return of my hummingbirds every spring. They are amazing tiny creatures that zoom by at mach speed or will fly right up to your face and check you out. They are curious little things too. When I was holding the feeder the other day, one poked at my fingernail. I guess he had never seen a fingernail. It wasn't because it was a pretty color like a flower, because I don't paint my fingernails. Then one evening, I noticed one that had flown really low to the ground and hovered above an object in my yard. I got down to see what it was-and it was a tree frog!
I thought it was funny that a hummingbird would notice a frog.
Now I am ready for them to go home-back to South America. Every day, I must rush home to fill up the empty feeders and make 16 more cups of sugar water. If you don't fill up the feeders, they come to my kitchen window and look in, as if to say-"Hey! We are on empty out here!" They swarm the feeders like a bunch of mad bees. I can fill up the feeder and hold it out and they will fly right up and sit and drink, while the others zoom in and out, around your arms and head. It is quite astonishing the maneuvers these little birds can perform.
Sometimes, they accidentally fly into my garage-they are hard to catch, but then you get the joy of holding it for a brief moment before it zooms out of your hands.
They put on a show every day and are fun to watch.

Ideas for Teen Programming in the Library

I work at a regional library in West Tennessee and we are doing an inservice on Teens in the Library. Some of the public libraries in our region do have teen programs and have good, well attended events. I need some really cool ideas for teen programs, activities, etc. I have some large libraries (with $$$) and small, one librarian libraries, so no idea is too small.
